CITIES ON FIRE – Beats from a Struggle tells a story about the Anglophone Crisis in Cameroon. But more than story-telling, the entire project seeks to console those who are suffering, speak truth to power, call for meaningful dialogue and peaceful resolution of the crisis, and pray for the dead.
The Anglophone Crisis escalated at the close of 2016, and since then, many people have died in the conflict, many homes burned down; communities have disintegrated and families are in crisis. This project was born in this context, yet it has songs that will last forever. It ultimately calls for the fires to be put out from burning the cities. The main track broadens the “cities on fire” into an African perspective.
Released in July of 2020, this body of work tells a story of the war. But it does more than that. It seeks to console the suffering, speak truth to power, add to the voices calling for genuine and inclusive dialogue, and pray for the dead. The 13-track album features Bona Chucks, Commy Keyz, and Fara wo Milan. The songs are in English and Lamnso’. The album was produced with Dijay Kay.
The project caught the attention of the BBC, who in January 2022 carried out an interview with Nsay ki la (Listen here ). The focus was on the use of music to highlight the armed conflict in Cameroon. Some local newspapers and blogs also picked up the story about it. Every month, many people come to discover it anew. It will always be relevant.
